Central Training
Stride offers a range of courses to teachers, nursery nurses and support staff and is constantly developing its curriculum to include new and relevant subject matter. The days are run in a relaxed manner and participants are encouraged to play an active part in order to ensure that their needs are met. This is achievable because Stride keeps the numbers small and the atmosphere friendly.
Stride courses on offer include:
- 5 SLD days
- 5 PMLD days
Working with new teachers
Since the demise of initial teacher training in special needs it has been very difficult for new teachers coming into special schools to know how to begin planning for the needs of their pupils. The support offered by the local authorities in the NQT year is variable but often, due to the lack of expertise available within the general programme, is inappropriate. On the new teachers course Stride offers a 'whistle-stop tour' of the first most initially overwhelming aspects of teaching, i.e. planning for progress, working in a team and classroom organisation. We then offer all participants another course for free as a way of demonstrating our commitment to their professional development and in recognition of just how tough it is working with pupils with often very complex needs. This day is also attended by teachers new to Special Education. We have found that they will often then return many times to our courses during the first year as they are so hungry for knowledge and practical skills. It is very satisfying for us to watch them grow in confidence.Read Emma's story
